Mrs. Ophelia K. Gaines, Executive Director, Concerted Services, Inc. is pleased to announce that Head Start will be expanding in Atkinson County. A Head Start classroom will be housed in Pearson, in the old Health Department. Children will need to be three years old by September 1st, and families will need to complete an eligibility application. “We saw a need for this service for families that are unable to travel to Willacoochee but wanted to attend Head Start,” stated Dr. Shelli Tyre, Head Start Director.

“We can’t thank the County Commission enough,” noted Mrs. Gaines. “They worked tirelessly with us to find the program needed space. When renovations were required in order to house the children, the Commission went above and beyond to make the needed renovations for us. I want to also thank Ms. Brenda Morris, CSI Governing Board member for her hard work in helping to make this possible.”

The program is already recruiting staff and children and will be moving into the site over the summer so it will be ready for children in August when the program reopens. Interested families can contact the family advocate at 912.534.6035 to schedule an appointment for an application. The program will continue to operate four classrooms as the center in Willacoochee, two for infants and toddlers and two for pre-school children.

CSI thanks all the community partners who assisted in this expansion. “We are humbled by the assistance we received and the good will of Atkinson County,” stated Mrs. Gaines. “Together we will be able to serve additional families in the area.”
